The reverse image of what?

Without the true American Flag present, what is the Army's flag a reverse image of? There's no true American Flag present on the left shoulder to justify a reverse image. It's just a stand alone backward flag. Of all the many acceptable ways to display the American Flag, theirs isn't one of them. Why on earth would they automatically include a backward American Flag on the uniform when there are perfectly good places to put a real American Flag?
